Using the Library

The McCarthy Library is part of both Napa Valley College and the Napa County Library System. Because NVC is a public college, everyone is welcome to come visit the library. However, due to contractual restrictions, some services can only be accessed with a current NVC login.

Here is a breakdown of who can use our services and how:

Library Cards

REGISTER FOR A LIBRARY CARD

A library card is required to borrow materials from the McCarthy library. This is separate from an NVC student or employee ID. You can apply for a free library card from Napa Valley College using the link below. A Napa County Public Library card or Solano Community College Library card can also be used to borrow materials at the McCarthy Library. 

  • Library Account
    Access your library account to see borrowed materials, due dates, holds, and fines, and fees.
  • Get a Library Card

  1. Click the Get a Library Card Link
  2. Locate the pull down menu "Please select a home library" and select Napa Valley College
  3. Enter your Zip Code
  4. Select Your City
  5. Fill out your name, address, and other requested information.
  6. Create a 4 to 9 digit pin, use only numbers.
  7. Once you have submitted your information, write down your PACREG#, NVC ID#, and bring your photo ID to the Library Service Desk to get your library card.

The main floor of the library contains space for hundreds of students.

Features:

  • Study desks and cubicle space for "bring your own device".
  • Abundant charging outlets.
  • Printer and copy machine room.
  • Sofas and armchairs.

The purpose of the library computers is to support students, faculty, and staff who are engaged in research and academic activities.

Apple and Windows desktop computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Library has eleven group study rooms, three of which double as media viewing rooms.

Features:

  • Five rooms have wall monitors with HDMI connection to a laptop. 
  • All rooms have whiteboards. Whiteboard markers are available at the Circulation Desk. 
  • The largest rooms can accommodate up to 8 people. 

Using:

  • Room are for student collaboration on academic assignments.
  • Room keys are available for check out at the Circulation Desk.
  • Rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. 
  • Rooms may be used for up to 2 hours.
  • Preference is given to groups of two or more.

The quiet study room is located on the left side of the library from the main entrance. It is not available between Summer 2023 to Summer 2024.

The library building has five classrooms. Rooms 1738 and 1740 are on the first floor. Rooms 1760, 1761, and 1772 are on the second floor. Rooms are scheduled through the Scheduling Office.

The Special Collections room contains "The California Collection," which includes books purchased from a bequest to build a local history collection and promote student and community interest in Napa's heritage. The collection comes primarily from the holdings of David Wheatley, a local prune farmer and avid collector of California history. Please visit our Special Collections library guide for more information.

The room is available for local history research under the supervision of a librarian. send inquiries to librarians.
