Faculty Support

The McCarthy Library's Mission is to "support the mission and programs of Napa Valley College through the acquisition and management of academic information resources, the development of information literacy, and providing excellent service to library users." Put simply, we are here to support you and your students! If there is anything that the library can help you with, or that you think we might be able to help with, please let us know. We do our best to reach out to the whole NVC community, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance. We will do whatever we can within our ability and means to help you and your students to succeed.

In addition to the resources that the library pays for, there are many high-quality free resources available online that you can use in your classes (there are also many poor quality resources, but that is another discussion about evaluation). They are two main categories you will encounter: Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access (OA). Napa Valley College encourages faculty to consider adopting open resources for their classes in order to mitigate some of the high costs of textbooks.

The NVC Library maintains a collection of course reserves for currently enrolled students to borrow.

If you have items in course reserves that are not needed this semester, please pick them up at the library at your earliest convenience.

To add an item to Course Reserves:

Loan Periods:

If there is one copy: only available for use in the library for 2 hours (can be renewed if no one is waiting).

If there are multiple copies: additional copies can be made available for 2-hour, 24-hour, or 7 day loans.

Purchasing Books:

If you need the library to purchase the book, please indicate that in the form. Purchase decisions are based on need and funding, which is very limited. Please try to get a copy from your department or the publisher before asking the library to purchase.

Electronic Textbooks:

The library is unable to purchase electronic copies of textbooks. Please see our Open Resources Guide for information on finding and selecting free electronic textbooks.

Librarians are able to create library guides for your classes or assignments.

Example Guides:

NVC Librarians are available to teach workshops, including general library orientations, research skills, and more. If you would like to request a librarian to teach a workshop, please submit the following form at least two weeks before the preferred session date. The NVC librarians will do their best to accommodate your class schedule and needs.
