Bio

My name is Shawna Bynum, you're welcome to call me Shawna, Professor Bynum, Mrs. B, whatever is most comfortable for you.

I have been teaching at Napa Valley College full time since 2003 (with the exception of a one year hiatus I took to teach up in Oregon, where I grew up).  I have served in many different roles on our campus and am currently the Coordinator for the Math Department.  So in addition to teaching classes, I also do all the administrative work to keep our department running.

I live in Napa with my husband, three kids (two boys and one transgirl), our two cats, two dogs, chickens, bees, and frequently a litter of foster kitten.  I grew up outside of a small town in Oregon, and although I absolutely love Napa it always amazes me I'm raising city kids!  So those of you who think of Napa as a small town, should keep in mind - it's all about perspective.

I have loved math ever since I was in fourth grade, when I decided I wanted to be a math teacher.  However, it hasn't always come easy for me!  I can relate first hand to how hard this material can be to learn and my goal in this class is to make it as accessible as possible for you.

I attended Chico State right after high school and got my Masters at UC Davis after taking two years off to work at SRJC (which is where I fell in love with the California Community College System).

In my free time I love to play board games, do puzzles, camp and boat with my family, read frivolous fiction, and drink red wine with good friends.
