Student Eligibility

Eligibility for Financial Aid

Most financial aid is awarded based on students' financial need.   Students must be an undergraduate student working towards an eligible program of study.  Limitations to financial aid eligibilty apply to students who have already received a bachelor's degree.  Student's with a bachelor's degree are not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), CalGrant, and Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG).  Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) to apply for student financial aid.  Students need to apply each academic year.  The FAFSA and CADAA for the next academic year are available each year beginning on October 1.  In addition to completing the FAFSA or CADAA, students must meet the minimum eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen to be eligible for federal and state financial aid (complete the FAFSA)
  • Undocumented students, DACA recipients, U Visa holders, students with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who meet the AB540 Requirements for state financial aid (complete the CADAA)
  • Demonstrate "financial need"
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Be enrolled as a regular student in an eligible Program of Study that leads to an associate's degree, transfer degree program, or certificate program that leads to gainful employment
  •  Not be in default on any federal student loan programs
  • Not owe an overpayment to the U.S. Department of Education such as the Federal Pell Grant and FSEOG

Student Aid Index (SAI)

Most financial aid is awarded based on your financial need, which is also known as your financial eligibility.  The Federal Student Aid (FSA) calculates your Student Aid Index (SAI) from the data you provided on your FAFSA, and the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) calculates your SAI from the data you provided on your CADAA.  The SAI is used to determine your Federal Pell Grant eligibility,  and also used in calculating your financial need in addition to the Cost of Attendance (COA) and Other Financial Assistance (OFA).

Financial Need = COA - SAI - OFA
