LGBT Education Program FAQ
What exactly is LGBT Studies?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people make up a minority population that transcends nationality, race, ethnicity, and gender. This program explores the social, political, and cultural issues associated with sexual orientation and gender identity minorities and how these issues impact families, education, and communities.
Who should participate in this program?
This program is ideal for any student purusing a career in a social service field including health care, education, child care, criminal justice, social work, human services, business, hospitality, and other fields that interact with and serve people. Our Associaties Degree in LGBT Education and our LGBT Studies Certificate Program is unique in California and adds a great deal to a resume or job application.
Many students choose this program to gain a better understanding of themselves as well as to learn how to engage in creating change related to the LGBTQ community through activism and education.
How to a get into the program?
You can get into the LGBT Education Program by simply registering for one of the LGBT Studies classes. You can start in the fall, spring, or summer semester. If you are a new student at Napa Valley College, begin by completing an application for admission to the college.
Do any of these courses transfer to other schools?
All of the LGBT courses transfer to the CSU system. LGBT-120 and LGBT-121 transfer to the CSU and meets the requirement for social science (D4). They also transfers to the UC system and meets the IGETC requirement for social and behavioral sciences (4D).
Courses may be transferable to San Diego State University Bachelor's Degree in LGBT Studies Program.
How can a course in this program help me graduate from Napa Valley College?
LGBT-120 and LGBT-121 meet the Napa Valley College graduation requirement multi-cultural and gender studies.
Is there an LGBTQ Learning Community?
The Pride Learning Community is an LGBTQ+ focused learning community open to all students. This learning community offers students an immersive, engaging, and exciting learning experience beyond what you get from a class. The learning community includes a cohort of students who complete 4 classes together over 2 semesters. Students learn together with a team of faculty and college counselors. There are no additional costs for particpating in this learning community.
I'm not gay, so how could this program benefit me?
The majority of students who take our classes and who are currently participating in the degree and certificate program do not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. It's more than likely that you know a friend, family member, or co-worker who is a member of the LGBTQ community. This program will give you a better understanding of those people who you care about and of issues impacting LGBT people. Learning about other people enhances your understanding of society and our culture.
What is a class in this program like?
The LGBT Studies classes are highly interactive and full of discussions, small group activities, video media, and project based learning. The requirements for success are much the same as any other college level credit course.
