Course Descriptions

Spanish 120 (Elementary Spanish 1):This is a beginning, first semester Spanish class, intended for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. This is a 5-unit course, and includes topics such as learning simple conversation, talking about clothes, your family, describing people, telling time, discussing hobbies, ordering food, etc. The course will meet your foreign language requirement. This course is not intended to be taken by students who come from a home where Spanish is spoken. Textbook: Tu Mundo, 2nd edition.

Spanish 110 (Elementary Spanish Part A): This is a beginning, first semester Spanish class, intended for students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. This course is aimed at fulfilling the foreign language requirement, but must be followed by Span 111 in order to get the transferable credit. It's a slower-paced 3 unit course that covers the topics in the first half of Spanish 120. This course is not intended to be taken by students who come from a home where Spanish is spoken. Textbook: Tu Mundo, 2nd edition.

Spanish 111 (Elementary Spanish Part B): This course is aimed at filling the foreign language requirement, and must be taken after Span 110 in order to get the transferable credit. It is also a 3 unit course, and covers the topics in the second half of Spanish 120. Textbook: Tu Mundo, 2nd edition.

Spanish 121 (Elementary Spanish 2): This is a second semester, 5-unit course designed to be taken after Span 120 or Span 111. It covers topics such as talking about your house and neighborhood, traveling, talking about what you enjoy doing, health, memories, relationships and past experiences. The course will meet your foreign language requirement. Textbook: Tu Mundo, 2nd edition.

Spanish 240 (Intermediate Spanish 1): This is a third semester, 5-unit course designed to be taken after Span 121. It covers topics such as relationships, health and well-being, hobbies, and daily life. The course includes short stories and movie clips, including more in-depth study of the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course will meet your foreign language requirement. Textbook: Tu Mundo, 2nd edition.

Spanish 241 (Intermediate Spanish 2): This is a fourth semester, 5-unit course designed to be taken after Span 240. It covers topics such as traveling, nature, technology and science, and the workforce and the economy. The course includes short stories and movie clips, including more in-depth study of the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. The course will meet your foreign language requirement.

Spanish 280 (Spanish for Heritage Speakers 1): This 5-unit course is the first semester of our program for heritage speakers of Spanish. The program is designed for students who have grown up around Spanish in the home, but may not feel completely confident in the language, or who have never spent time learning to read and write it. The class will help you increase your vocabulary, practice speaking, reading and writing, and teach you about cultures of the Spanish speaking world, including issues that affect Latino populations in the U.S. It will also count towards your foreign language requirement, but will not be as tedious as taking an intro course intended for students with little to no Spanish. 

Spanish 281 (Spanish for Heritage Speakers 2): This 5-unit course is the second semester of our program for heritage speakers of Spanish. The program is designed for students who have grown up around Spanish in the home, but may not feel completely confident in the language, or who have never spent time learning to read and write it. The class will help you increase your vocabulary, practice speaking, reading and writing, and teach you about cultures of the Spanish speaking world, including issues that affect Latino populations in the U.S. It will also count towards your foreign language requirement, but will not be as tedious as taking an intro course intended for students with little to no Spanish. 

Spanish 282 (Introduction to Hispanic Literature): This course is a 3-unit introduction to literature in Spanish designed for students who are able to read and comprehend Spanish well enough to read, discuss, and write about works of literature in Spanish. Upon completion of this course, students will have greatly increased their understanding of the literary and cultural history of Spain and Latin America. This course is strongly recommended for potential Spanish majors. It may be taken concurrently with Spanish 241 or Spanish 281.
