Class Presentation
This class is presented online using Blackboard 9.1 Learning Management System. The class includes a Learning Module to orient students unfamiliar with BlackBoard 9.1 to the class management system. A new version of Blackboard 9 was added in December 2012 so some minor changes may be seen by previous users of Blackboard 9.
Course Description
A study of the basic elements of financial management with emphasis on financial planning, budgeting, and working capital management plus other areas of practical interest to small business owners and/or middle managers.
Personal Computer and Basic Skills required
For successful completion of this class you need to have a reliable PC with as fast as possible Internet access and the following skills :

Copying and pasting from a clipboard

Browsing the Internet.
Class Requirements
Students are required to logon to the BlackBoard site on the first day of class.This class is usually over subscribed so when an enrolled student fails to attend the first class wait listed students will fill that place.
All assignments will be posted and student submissions will be made in BlackBoard. No printed submissions are required.
Failure to log in regularly to Blackboard at least every two days and checking the latest postings on announcements, messages, and the Student Help Desk and failure to submit assignments on time or participate fully in Case Studies and Class Discussions will result in the student being dropped from the class.

Recommended Preparation
ACCT 120 Introduction to Accounting or equivalent
MATH 90 Pre Algebra or BUSI 90 Business Math
A good knowledge of Microsoft Excel is also recommended.
Materials and Computer Requirements
A USB Flash Drive is recommended to store class and data files so that you can access materials away from your home computer. 3 or 4 GB or greater is preferred, particularly if used for other classes.
You may need a hard covered notebooks to house your notes and other reference materi9al
A reliable PC and the ability to load, navigate and use software effectively are essential to complete an online class successfully as is a competent level of keyboarding. A reliable internet connection as fast as possible is also needed for all Online classes.
Group working is enhanced if you have a headset with microphone (many laptops have a video cam with audio) since there are many programs available on Blackboard or on the Internet, such as Skype, that enable you to have live meetings with your group members.
If your PC or Internet is not working that is not an acceptable excuse for submitting assignments or other requirements late or not completing them. You must make alternative arrangements to submit your work. You are advised to have a fallback option available at all times.
Textbook
The textbook is CFIN 3, Besley/Bringham from Southwestern Cengage. The textbook is bundled with Aplia and a Finance CourseMate Printed Access Card. It is available in the Bookstore.
Two copies will be available in the Library on closed Reserve for use particularly for Financial Aid students before they have their textbooks. These copies do not have Aplia.
The book with Bundle is also available from SouthWestern Cengage.

Financial Calculator
You must have a financial calculator to use in the class. The recommended calculator is the HP-10bII. That will handle every thing that you need in the class. There is an HP-17BII+ that does more and costs more but the HP-10bII does all you need.
Instruction on that calculator is given on the class site and Aplia. The ability to use the calculator is critical to success in the class so buy it early and practice its use.

Use of the Library (LLRC)
Two copies of your textbook will be available on Closed Reserve in the Library. If you have your own Laptop there is WIFI in the Library and you can use PCs in the library.
Class Discussions and Group Work
Class discussions and Group Work are is an integral part of the class. All students will be required to participate in class and group tasks and make useful contributions to those activities.
Submissions and Projects
This class involves a commitment of at least 8 hours of study per week
Submissions and projects are due in accordance with the class schedule. Depending on class progress this schedule may be amended during the class. Computer time at home or other locations will be necessary to complete required submissions on time.
All assignments and assessments MUST be submitted on time through Blackboard Assignments or Assessments on time by all students including late arrivals to the class. Those overdue will earn no grade points. Copies attached to messages or e-mail are not accepted.
Any personal problems affecting student class progress must be notified to the instructor by site message for consideration prior to any due date/times .
This is arrangement is in fairness to those make the effort to submit on time.
Regular log in to the class Blackboard site at least every two days to check announcements, messages, the Student Help Desk, and your group site is necessary to complete this class. Failure to do this regularly will result in students being dropped from the class.
The class will require study of chapter material and completion of case problems, discussions, and other assignments to enhance understanding of the material. A Group Stock Market simulation is also included in the class.

Napa College requires academic honesty to be followed by all students, Cheating is taken very seriously. Make sure that you go the the Online Education page at the College web site and click on Academic Honesty in the left sidebar and study the Napa College Academic Honesty Policy. You will be required to demonstrate your knowledge of the policy as part of an assessment in the first weeks of class.
The College uses testing software to detect copying without acknowledgement from the Internet.
In this class "tests" includes Assessments and Assignments including those in Aplia.

Withdrawal from a Course
If you are unable to complete this course, it is your responsibility to drop the class. See the NVC Credit Class Schedule for the official class drop dates. Failure to drop may result in an F on your transcript. If you experience a short term problem that affects your study please consult your instructor to see if special arrangements can be made to enable you to complete the class.
If you need to drop this class, please inform your instructor immediately by e-mail as a courtesy as your decision may affect other students.

Grading Policy
All assessments, assignments, case studies and exercises will be earn grade points. Class Grades will be awarded at the end of the class as follows:
Grade: A 90% or over, B 80 to 89%, C 70 to 79%, F below 70%.
