Two Napa Valley College Phi Theta Kappa scholars were presented with All-California Community College Academic Team awards in Sacramento March 23 by the Community College League of California.
Kelsey Hadfield and Ryan Judd were selected for the All-California Academic Second Team. Both carry a 4.0 grade-point average. This year, 93 students were selected from two million students enrolled in California's 113 community colleges for the first, second and third teams.
Hadfield, a biophysics major, hopes to enter the biophysics program at UCSF after completing her bachelor's degree. President of the Beta Beta Sigma Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at NVC, Hadfield also serves as the Student Trustee and as President of the Campus Community Garden Club.
While academics and volunteering in the community are high priorities for Hadfield, she travels with her family as much as work and school will allow. While working as a music teacher to pay her way through college, she looks forward to beginning her career in the laboratory after she completes graduate school and her daughter completes high school.
Judd, an astrophysics major, enrolled at NVC to create a better life for her two children. As a nontraditional student, Judd struggled to catch up on subjects she had forgotten during time away from school. Spurred by a lifelong ambition to work with the stars, she is pursuing a degree in Astrophysics.
While balancing time with her kids and spouse, Judd has maintained a spot on the Dean's list since 2015. She is the VP of Finance for NVC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and an active member of Student Support Services. Judd volunteers at her daughter's grade school as well as The Meadows retirement home in Napa. She plans to transfer this summer to the University of Arkansas, achieve her doctorate in Astrophysics and eventually work with NASA.
Grades, leadership and community service determine selection to the All-California team. All award winners received medallions of honor and certificates recognizing their accomplishments.
The awards were presented during a luncheon at the Sacramento Convention Center.
