Transgender correctional officer
to speak Wednesday at NVC
Mandi Camille Hauwert, the first openly transgender officer at San Quentin State Prison, will speak from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Napa Valley College Little Theater.
The appearance, sponsored by the sociology department, is free and open to the public.
The talk, about her unlikely day job as a correctional peace officer, is designed to educate and highlight the issues faced by much of the transgender community and to encourage discussion on the rights of transgender people and law enforcement.
Hauwert, who is part of the blogging community on the Huffington Post, writes about the pain of growing up as a closeted transgender woman and the courage it took to claim her femininity.
She serves on the committee for Letter People – a network for LGBTQ professionals – and writes for Your True Gender, a nonprofit organization.
The Little Theatre is located in the 1200 building.
