As You Like It

As You Like It by William Shakespeare opens at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center Studio Theater on September 12, 2014 at 8pm. Directed by Shakespeare Napa Valley’s Artistic Director Jennifer King, the production features Napa Valley College students and Bay Area professional actors, including Aaron Wilton as the infamous Jaques. The staging of As You Like It is based upon the production Ms. King co-directed with an International cast in London this summer.
In June, King traveled to the UK, on behalf of Shakespeare Napa Valley to develop and co-direct an abridged version of As You Like It with Jay Paul Skelton, former Artistic Director of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival. The two were thrilled to work with actors from the United Kingdom, Sweden and the United States, including Napa Valley College alum Phil Ferrero. The production was performed at The Rose Theatre at Kingston upon Thames as part of the International Youth Arts Festival July 14 through 21, 2014.
Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It is intimately staged in the round. This ninety minute, interactive and family friendly adaptation is guaranteed to pluck at the heartstrings and tickle the funny bone. The Napa production of As You Like It, will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm., September 12 through 28, 2014 in the Napa Valley College Studio Theater. Along with the public performances, there will be four student matinees September 16, 18, 22 and 24, 2014.
Jennifer King (Director of US production/Co-Director of UK production) is the Founder/Artistic Director of Napa Valley Conservatory Theater and Shakespeare Napa Valley at Napa Valley College where she is a Professor of Theater Arts. Her teaching and directing credits include work for the California Shakespeare Theater (Associate Artist), Aurora Theatre Company, Dallas Theater Center, SF Playground, Berkeley Playhouse, Sonoma County Repertory Theater, 6th Street Playhouse, the White Barn, the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, Richland, Foothill and Solano Colleges, as well as Sonoma State University and the University of California, Davis. Regional directing credits include: The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, The Comedy of Errors, Stones in his Pockets, Sweeney Todd, Much Ado About Nothing, The People's Temple, 'ART", Cyrano, I Am My Own Wife, Man of La Mancha, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, All the Great Books (abridged), Disney's Aladdin (Six Bay Area Critics Circle Nominations, including Best Director), Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew, La Cage aux Folles, Tuesdays with Morrie, and The Laramie Project.
Jay Paul Skelton (Co-Director of UK production) is a practice-as-research PhD candidate at Kingston University. He most recently directed Seneca’s Medea for the 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and co-directed The Comedy of Errors for the 2013 International Youth Arts Festival in London with Jennifer King. He was Assistant Professor of Shakespeare at the University of Notre Dame (2004-2012) in South Bend, Indiana, where he also taught courses in acting and directing. During this period, Skelton was also Artistic Director of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, the professional theatre in residence on campus. He currently lectures at both Kingston University and the University of Notre Dame London Program, and has guest-lectured and led workshops at other UK institutions such as London South Bank University and Rose Bruford College. Skelton received his BS in Marketing from Babson College, MFA in Directing from The Theatre School at DePaul University, and MA in Classical Theatre from Kingston University. He has written, produced, or directed over 105 productions in London, Boston, New York, and Chicago.
Equity Actor, Aaron Wilton (Jaques in the US production), is making his debut with Shakespeare Napa Valley! Locally, he has performed with San Jose Rep, Aurora Theatre Company, San Jose Stage Company, Pacific Repertory Theatre, Theatre Rhinoceros, Sacramento Theatre Company, Capital Stage Company, B Street, Willows Theatre Company and PlayGround, where he is an acting company member. Regionally he has performed with George Street Playhouse (w/ Oscar nom. Amy Irving & Emmy nom. Peter Scolari), Hudson Stage Company, Shakespeare in the Wild, Ars Nova, The Beckmann Theater, Curan Repertory Company and Greenwich Street Theatre, where his co-created show Happy Mundanes performed at the New York City Fringe Festival. He has numerous Film, TV and video game credits and has done commercials with Blue Shield, Chase, Taco Bell, Adobe and US Cellular.
