National Book Award Winner to Appear at Writers' Conference Event

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER TO APPEAR AT WRITERS' CONFERENCE EVENT    Morning at Napa Valley College to feature discussion centered on George Packer's The Unwinding

2013 National Book Award winner George Packer will appear at Napa Valley College March 22 as part of an event presented by the Napa Valley Writers' Conference.

Packer is author of The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America, which documents how seismic shifts have created a country of winners and losers, allowing unprecedented freedom while rending the social contract, driving the political system to the verge of breakdown, and setting citizens adrift to find new paths forward. The writers' conference event will explore these challenges and how our society might surmount them.

Following a keynote presentation by Packer, participants will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with local leaders in education, health care and the wine industry about efforts to promote economic and environmental sustainability. Locally-sourced breakfast and an optional lunch will be provided.

The event marks a new venture by the Napa Valley Writers' Conference, which since 1981 has produced week-long summer workshops for fiction writers and poets at the Upper Valley Campus of Napa Valley College.

"This program builds on our summer workshops, which focus on the act of creation, to offer readers and writers alike the opportunity to explore the power and reach of the written word out in the world," explained Anne Evans, the conference's program director. "Can writing address the challenges we face as a community and nation and effect meaningful change? We think it can."

In addition to conference host and sponsor Napa Valley College, the event is produced with support from Stanford Continuing Studies and the Napa tourism bureau, DoNapa.

The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes place at the Performing Arts Center at Napa Valley College, 2277 Napa-Vallejo Highway, Napa. Admission for the morning program and lunch is $85. Tickets for just Packer's presentation and the community panel cost $40. For more information and to register, visit
