November 16, 2014 at 3pm
Music Napa Valley at Napa Valley College brings Rick Shinozaki, violinist, to the Loretta C. Silvagni Recital Hall at 3pm on November 16, 2014 as a continuation of the Master Series Concert season at the Napa Valley College Performing Arts Center. Join us for this rare program of all new music for solo violin, including a piece composed by Napa Valley College instructor, Mazdak Khamda, Seven Pieces for solo violin.
Shinozaki is a member of the contemporary classical duo Two Blind Mice, Principal Second Violin of Symphony Silicon Valley and Principal Second Violin of the Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra. A former member of the acclaimed Del Sol String Quartet, he has recorded eleven commercially released albums and toured nationally and internationally. Rick has participated with Del Sol in commissioning and premiering numerous important works for string quartet -- from Mason Bates, Gabriela Lena Frank, Chinary Ung, Mohammed Fairouz, Tania León, Peter Sculthorpe, Per Nørgård and many others.
Rick is former Concertmaster of the Nova Vista Symphony, and has served in the same capacity with the Vallejo Symphony. As Concertmaster of the Hot Springs Festival Orchestra, Rick has performed as soloist in Bottesini's Grand Duo Concertante and recorded James Price Johnson's Yamekraw and Louis Moreau Gottschalk's Second Symphony for the Naxos label. Other solo appearances include the world premiere of Viennese composer Zdzislaw Wysocki's Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra under Kent Nagano and the Berkeley Symphony, and Durwynne Hsieh's Concerto for Marimba, Violin and Orchestra (premiered with the West Marin Festival Orchestra, and later performed with the Marin Symphony and San Francisco Concerto Orchestra).
Rick has collaborated closely with composers William Jay Sydeman, Durwynne Hsieh and Mark Fish, commissioning, performing and editing their work. With pianist Irene Jacobson, the Shinozaki-Jacobson Duo has delighted audiences with an eclectic repertoire and interpretations cited as "scintillating" and "in perfect harmony," resulting in a CD release of Alberto Ginastera's Pampeana #1 for the Latin American Chamber Music Society.
Rick is a protégé of Serban Rusu of Tiburon; he also studied extensively with legendary pedagogue Josef Gingold and Yuval Yaron at Indiana University, from which he holds a Master of Music degree.
