Alex Shantz Elected Napa Valley College Student Trustee
December 9, 2013 (Napa, California) – Alex Shantz was elected NVC Student Trustee in the special election held on the Napa Valley College campus on December 3rd and 4th, 2013.
Shantz will fill the vacancy left by outgoing trustee Ruscal Cayangyang who is leaving the position as of December 31, 2013 to pursue his full-time studies at UC Berkeley. Shantz will be carrying out the remainder of Cayangyang’s term for the Spring semester. Shantz won the election with 55.3% of the vote and ran against one other candidate: ASNVC Senator Angela Ituriaga, who received 44.7% of the vote. A total of 427 students voted over the two day period.
Shantz campaigned on a platform that called for promoting diversity, increasing sustainability , addressing student poverty, and enhancing student participation in shared governance at Napa Valley College. He previouslyserved as President of the Associated Students of Napa Valley College from 2010 to 2011 and for a single semester in 2012. He also served as Senator of Social Sciences from 2009 to 2010 and Vice President in 2011.
Currently, Shantz serves in local government as an at-large representative on the Napa County Gang and Youth Violence Commission. He also serves on a Community Garden Ad Hoc Committee formed by the Napa County Local Food Advisory Council.
Shantz is also involved with statewide politics as a co-coordinator for the Green Party of California. He will be the second Green in a row, following Ruscal Cayangyang, to serve as student trustee at Napa Valley College.
