VIVA MARIACHI FESTIVAL
Napa Valley College - April 25, 2020
Napa Valley College presents the second annual ¡Viva Mariachi! festival on Saturday, April 25, 2020. The event promotes the rich heritage and cultural traditions of Mexico through performances by Mariachi music ensembles.
During the day, Napa Valley College will host a free community concert as part of its Founders’ Day celebration on the McCarthy Library Plaza. The event will culminate with an evening concert in the College’s Performing Arts Center.
This year, we are hosting youth/student mariachi groups representing three levels of our nation’s public institutions: middle school, high school, and college. ¡Viva Mariachi! will feature:
Mariachi Los Gavilanes from Monaco Middle School in Las Vegas, which won first place at the San Juan Capistrano annual competition
Mariachi Tesoro high school students from San Fernando, which just won the title, “Best of the Best in California” at the California State Fair for the second consecutive year
Mariachi Los Broncos from Cal-Poly Pomona, one of the first college mariachi groups in the United States
Individuals will also have the opportunity to participate in workshops and master classes in mariachi music and history during the day. Then they will showcase their work during the evening performance.
Mariachi education is growing as more schools are incorporating mariachi to increase cultural awareness and provide students an opportunity to experience and safeguard cultural traditions. In school districts across the country, mariachi has joined traditional offerings like band and orchestra.
¡Viva Mariachi! offers a unique opportunity for our community to learn how these programs are thriving elsewhere in the U.S; how they enhance students’ academic success; all while enriching the cultural vitality and musical traditions of their institutions and surrounding communities.
Saturday morning and afternoon, student musicians and mariachi music directors will lead workshops and offer master classes in mariachi music and history. Bring your instrument and join us in sharing your skills, talent and enthusiasm for the music.
YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST 2 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, PROVIDE YOUR OWN
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AND REGISTER TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORKSHOP
Additional information on student enrollment will be available soon.
